be a goal digger

one date at a time ⛏ 🏆

hey there goal getter,

we’re one month into 2024 & if you set a new years resolution, odds are high (43% to be exact) that you’ve already quit.

even if you didn’t set a resolution, you’ve likely experienced the cycle of setting a goal, feeling pumped, and then…

poof.

the energy behind your goal is gone.

this is because a goal without accountability is like a car without fuel – it's not going anywhere.

accountability is transformative.

i know from personal experience that my accountability is how i got promotions, friendships, boyfriends, apartments, & countless opportunities.

i’m a very normal person.

i’m not special in any way.

the only thing that makes me seem special is that i’m fiercely accountable. if i decide or tell someone i will do something, i do it.

over the years, especially this past one working for myself, i’ve fine-tuned this skill even more. today, i’m sharing the only 2 accountability tools you need to be a successful goal digger.

today’s merry menu:
📐 discipline over regret
🛑 just don’t do it

discipline over regret

at its core accountability is about owning your actions & their outcomes.

it’s the bridge between intentions & achievements.

it’s the boring daily efforts.

it's the commitments, not just to others, but to yourself.

but it’s also the ultimate form of self-respect.

because accountability is choosing the pain of discipline over the far heavier pain of regret. we all know deep down that nothing is more soul-crushing than realizing we could have been or done more, if only we'd given it a real shot.

just don’t do it

we all know we’d be better off if we did what we said we were going to do.

but we don’t.

the truth is we suck at keeping promises, especially boring ones, to ourselves.

to make matters worse, this struggle is ofter paired with our own:

  1. lack of care

  2. lack of clarity

  3. lack of control

  4. lack of community

  5. lack of confidence

your exact reason may vary, but all our roadblocks are the same. we stop.

we just don’t do it.

95% success strategy

you’ve likely heard a zillion different productivity tips & tricks on this. while many are good, most overcomplicate it.

accountability boils down to 2 things: consistency & community.

the stats back this up to.

just look at this study from the association for talent development that i learned about from amanda goetz.

having a goal results in only a 10% likelihood of completing a goal

when you have a goal & set a specific accountability appointment with someone you’ve committed to, your likelihood of success jumps to 95%.

who doesn’t want to get an A on their goals?

this highlights how consistency & community are critical for success.

so to be a successful goal digger, you really only need:

  1. a calendar

  2. a community

we need a calendar to be consistent. we’re driven by deadlines.

we need community because we’re social creatures wired to seek social approval & avoid social disapproval. we’re driven by others knowing about our wins or failures.

consistency with community compounds.

goal game on

like all pieces of advice. i’ll be real with y’all. this is way easier said than done.

so thought it would be helpful to share how i’m using these 2 tools today as well as inspiration for how you can implement this.

i’m currently goal digging with these tools in 3 ways:

  • every quarter, i share my business goals as OKRs (objectives & key results) in amanda goetz’s office hours community.

  • every sunday, i send review of last week & goals for this week to my dear friend & fellow entrepreneur bk (i learned this practice from million dollar weekend & we’ve done it every week for 4 months). i find that every sunday i hustle to get more done from the list.

  • every day, i share my workout with the most supportive group of strangers on twitter (thank you jessica!). bonus points for most of my workouts being on peloton where they track my streaks & share them with friends.

you’ll notice i use a mix of platforms, people, & cadence based on the goal.

i advise you mix & match according to your preferences.

for you this might look like:

  • daily morning walk with your dog & your neighbor

  • weekly side hustle coworking date with a friend

  • quarterly virtual book club with strangers

  • weekly study date with a classmate

  • monthly workout class with a coworker

  • biweekly zoom meeting with a coach or mentor

  • daily streaming meditation class with your mom

so go get that date my dearest goal digger!

writing a newsletter is a fantastic way to use these 2 accountability tools.

you’re held accountable by your delivery cadence: daily, weekly, or monthly. and you’re more importantly held accountable by your promise to deliver to your community of readers.
