be noteworthy

last longer than 17 seconds

hey you — look alive :)

we’re merrymaking with metrics this morning!

later today i’m hosting my first merry makery corporate workshop on meaningful connection through handwritten notes.

my audience is more numbers driven so i gathered a few stats that help make the case why handwritten notes are so noteworthy.

since we haven’t talked numbers much here, i thought y’all might enjoy the metrics too.

let’s do this!

to set the scene, we’ll start with what is commonly called notification overload. this newsletter is one of the hundreds of messages, 253 to be exact, you will receive today .

this means that for every 60 emails, 42 text messages, or 23 push notifications, you get ONE piece of mail.

all these message mediums are not created equal.

251 digital messages. only 2 physical messages.

I know from first-hand experience how hard it is to standout in the violent sea of 120 emails you will receive today.

because studies have determined the lifespan of an email to be 17 SECONDS.

meanwhile, studies have also shown that…

6 of 10 people keep cards for SIX months.

think about how much money a business would pay for you to physically keep their emails, text messages, or a push notification for six months.

six months is the average. people sit on both ends of the storing spectrum.

i personally keep special cards for life. the cards are kept alongside my other highly important personal docs like my birth certificate, showing how precious these cards are to me.

i’m not alone in this habit.

the average american will save 17 cards over the course of their lives.

mere coincidence of 17 again. but easy to remember that your email will be forgotten in 17 seconds, but your card may be one of 17 kept FOREVER.

with these behaviors, it shouldn’t be surprising that our perception of handwritten letters remains very strong.

putting it all together, handwritten letters are triple threats that are:

  1. treasured

  2. thoughtful

  3. timeless

with that, i rest my case that notes are more noteworthy than ever.

new at merry makery

my merrymaking mission is to make cards for all moments.

not just feel good moments.

we need cards the most when we’re not feeling good.

so this week, thanks to inspiration from a dear friend, i’m dropping the f*ck that five card collection. for layoffs, breakups, and all the other hard times that inevitably come in life.

btw, i always welcome your card ideas & would be thrilled to bring them to life ❤️ .
